This book is an absolute romp. The twists and turns in the plot kept me engaged, the battles are visceral and cinematic, the emotional arc just insane. Characters get growth and development! Even side characters!
I don't think this particular style of thriller-romantasy could ever be done better. The contemporary/modern style of prose and speech is a bit jarring at times, but to the author's credit it means that expression never gets in the way of telling the story and helps her cut to the core of the feeling/emotion she's trying to convey.
And the ending. I didn't see it coming, but when you look at the clues that have been planted throughout, it makes sense.
Looking forward to the next book!

I didn’t want to buy into the hype, but this was a really fun read. It had all the familiar tropes of the genre yet still felt fresh and exciting. The dragons were especially cool, and while the romance didn’t fully capture my interest, I was completely hooked on the plot. It made the perfect companion for a 13-hour flight, and I can’t wait to dive into book two!

I knew I was going to like this book going into it, but it exceeded my expectations! I’m utterly obsessed and did not want to put it down after I started it! The last 50 pages had me on edge the entire time, and the very end had my jaw on the floor!! I definitely understand the hype around this series! I loved that while everyone thought Violet was weak and wouldn’t survive, Xaden saw her strengths and pushed her to be better and she pushed herself to be better too!! She’s so fierce and when she finally got her signet I had literally chills. I really really can’t wait to continue this series!! And I’m so excited for my copy of Onyx Storm to arrive!
Ok, usually I stray from Booktok books, but I actually loved this one. So many things I want to say but I don’t want to give anything away! The writing? Amazing. The tension and banter and romance? Guys, I was yelling at characters right along with their friends. And the ending? I was warned and it still caught me off guard. “It’s been. My honor.” Had me on the verge of tears.
