I first read Toadswart D'Amplestone in the pages of the wonderful "Epic Illustrated" magazine of the 1980's. But I had never read the complete story until I got hold of this collected edition, and I'm glad I did.

The art and story are not without their flaws, but Tim Conrad's bold black-and-white painterly panels are filled without dramatic light and shadows that enhance his somewhat straightforward gothic narrative. His sparse page layouts allow the dense images room to breath, and make the book a pleasure to read even when some of the action sequences fail to live up to their promise.

All-in-all, Toadswart D'Amplestone is a fascinating, if not entirely successful, attempt to use the comics medium in a strongly cinematic way, and is undeniably a fun read.
