I did really enjoy reading this book! I skim read it years ago and liked it, so I decided to pick it again to see how it holds up. For the most part, it does!
I think what I liked most about it is the dynamics between Callie and Desmond. If you get past the fact that she is rather young in the past scenes, I enjoyed seeing their friendship blossom and then seeing them in the future as the relationship turns more lustful and romantic. It’s a little second chance romance in a fantasy book!
There’s also this rather interesting mystery that the two are attempting to solve - one of the reasons that I didn’t rate this higher is because I wish there had been a little more focus on this problem. My other sticking point was a lot of Callie’s diction. It sounded like she was trying to be cool, and it mostly came off as trying to hard. I just cringed through those moments, pretended they didn’t happen, and things got better.
A lot of this book was laying the groundwork of Callie and Des’s relationship and a little bit was the actual mystery. It did feel a little unbalanced, and I’m hoping future books will solve that issue.
A quick read, and I’m excited to continue the series!
