I struggled with the first 70 or so pages feeling slow or like not much was happening, but when the first of many plot twists occurred I couldn't put it down. Give it a chance.

I don't usually write book reviews so bear with me.
I have mixed feelings about this book, it wasn't what I expected but I think it's better to go in a little blind.
I liked the story. even when it felt predictable I was still engaged and didn't want to put the book down.
but what really put a bad taste in my mouth is the way regine is written. it feels like the sassy/angry black woman + sidekick trope to me and I think she deserved better. I understand that racism and fatphobia are a part of her story, but some of the lines ness wrote about her size and race were off putting to me, specifically when they weren't talking about her backstory. I'm not sure how to word it and I haven't seen many others talk about it, but I almost dnf'ed the book bc of it.

Liked this one. A great read. But a little long and odd. Good story, and a plausible one at that. I really loved the characters and rooted for them all throughout. But I wanted more answers about the Driver!

This started out slow but great. The mystery, the tension, the surprise when
it suddenly turned out that there were other people in the world
. As an enjoyer of mystery and soft sci-fi I was a bit disappointed when certain truths were revealed. However after seeing another reviewer’s statement that this book is almost a decade old, I kinda forgave it for that.
I didn’t see some of the smaller plot twists coming such as
Gudmund sleeping with Monica or Seth choosing to give Owen to the escaped convict (that made me GASP)
but unfortunately I quickly predicted one of the biggest plot twists (
Owen being dead the whole time. There was just too much foreshadowing.

The characters weren’t super complex,
the ending lacked resolution to MANY questions, but in a frustrating way rather than a mysterious one
, and there was a bit too much explicit explanation for what and why the characters were feeling. In conclusion, this was pretty good, great by 2013 standards, just not my cup of tea at the moment.
