Catch-22

Joseph Heller

Was extremely easy to read. It was like listening to a soldier talk reminisce about his experience at a bar, or in a comfy café. It's a bit confusing regarding the timeline, just like people never tell their stories in a perfect chronology. But the overwhelming feelings that surround the life in the military and the absurdity of war is very pleasantly portrayed.

This book took many hours of my life that I won’t get back. I almost DNF’d it (which I rarely do), but given it’s highly recommended, I powered through. I understand and like the overall concept and lesson of the book. The military is crazy, war makes no sense, and we are all cogs in the Uncle Sam machine. That the only reason I’m giving it an extra 0.5 star. It really portrayed how so many things make no sense. However, it was way too long. Could have been cut significantly. It only got interesting in the last 10%. The humor wasn’t funny. The dialogue writing was extremely annoying with all the back and forth and contradictions. Timeline made no sense. It was also clearly written by a man, for men, as there were so many unnecessary misogynistic, sexist, gross remarks and dialogue (and actions) towards the women in this book. All of the women were portrayed as bimbos too. Pissed me off. I know lots of people like this book, but I just don’t get it…
