John Henry was written by Christine Platt and illustrated by Evelt Yanait. This book was published in 2021 for young elementary students. The story follows the folktale of John Henry's life. What he was like as a child to his growing confidence in his ability to beat a machine in creating a hole in the side of a mountain for trains. At the end of the book, there is a song that is said people would sing about John Henry and the accomplishment he had in his life. The story is a classic folktale that Platt tells in a fun and engaging way for young readers. John Henry's story can be inspiring to children because he was determined that his mining skills could not be outmatched by a machine. This book can be used in the classroom as an introduction to folktales. <folktales> <inspirational> <determination> <beating the odds>
