A fast read, a lightly fictionalised account of the man who was at Putin’s side at his rise and helped shape the manipulations, lies and fakeries that has cemented his power. Is it too sympathetic to Putin? I don’t think so, but it helps to understand why he has gained such a grip on the Russian people beyond a simplistic “strongman” narrative. Its use of real characters and events gives the impression that this fiction may be closer to reality than many non-fiction works
