'Operatic' by Kyo Maclear with art by Bryon Eggenscwhiler is a graphic novel about finding the thing you like, even if everyone doesn't.

Charlie is in a class in school where she is supposed to find her favorite song. She is puzzled by this assignment, because she hasn't really run across that song. She is also puzzled by the empty desk of student Luka, who is supposedly out sick. As the class studies genres, Charlie is struck by a Maria Callas aria. Maria's rise to fame is interwoven along with Luka's.

I liked this story of young people finding themselves when things are difficult. I liked the personal feel of the stories, and especially the way the interwoven stories used different colors for the art.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from House of Anansi and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

‘Operatic’ follows Charlie, a middle schooler, discovering her first crush in a small town and a newfound love of opera. Specifically Maria Callas. It goes into Maria’s life and we also learn about another boy in Charlie’s school who doesn’t go to class anymore. I think this one just tried to do too much. There’s a lot of storylines to follow and the art confused me as to who was who for a lot of characters. Overall, interesting but only okay.

The story was a bit muddled, but the artwork was beautiful.

Ambient is the word that comes to mind for this book. There’s so much space between the sparse words for feeling and listening. And it’s full of music- it literally flows through every page. I loved the use of color to differentiate Charlie’s story, Luka’s story, and Charlie’s newfound fascination with opera singer Maria Callas. It’s very specific in that it’s about the end of 8th grade and opera music, but it’s also a general coming of age story. The ending came together in just a few unrealistic frames given that so much musing and drama took over the story up until then.
