This book is about a group of kids in 8C, a music class in middle school. They are tasked with doing a project on a genre of music that defines them. Charlie is having a hard time figuring out what type of music defines her. They are learning about a different genre of music each day and Charlie doesn't know which one she relates to the most. Until they come to opera. She discovers Maria Callas, an amazing opera singer. She finally finds something that she connects to.

This is a fantastic book. I loved the story and the artwork. This is one of those books that I would recommend to someone if they are just starting out reading comics/graphic novels. I think that this is a fantastic addition to any library - personal or public.

I liked the art and the unique storyline. However, the book had loose ends that the author didn't tie up. I don't know if Maclear wanted to be mysterious and realistic, but it didn't work for this book. I thought I was missing something and had to reread, but certain questions were just never answered. It could have been better, could have been worse.

The cover and title do not do this book justice, nor do I think will it attract the audience I think is meant to read this book - WHICH IS EVERY MIDDLE SCHOOLER. This book is about a cool music teacher and awkward middle schoolers who take a chance to stand out, who are ostracized, some suffer - some go out of their comfort zone to help, others don't - important things happen in this book. The illustrations are wonderful. The tone and pace are perfect. But the title...which I get - brings attention to a type of music most middle school kids are not going to dig - is going to turn off a LOT of readers, in my humble opinion. I know my 14 year old son will love this story, but balk at the cover an title.

Still - if you can sell it - do it. This book is AMAZING.

This graphic novel, which I would recommend primarily to middle school-age kids, is a beautiful coming of age story about friendship, fitting in vs. standing out, and finding your group, all wrapped up in the way music can be powerful and life-changing. The artwork is gorgeous, and I'm absolutely in love with the use of color as a representation of different moods and time periods.

A sweet, lovely book. I bought it for the beautiful illustrations but was surprised by how much I loved the story by the end of it, though it was a bit slow to start. I loved the representation in it as well.

Quiet in the right ways and loud in the best ways, Operatic is beautiful and full of feeling. There are two really lovely things about the book that stick out to me most, One: the way music is illustrated is amazing. I cant think of a graphic novel than managed to visually catch the goosebumps feeling of music so well. Two: it doesn't talk down to you. This is a book about big teenage feelings and being yourself, things that can get real trite or preachy if you don't frame them well. Maclear and Eggenschwiler's solution is to Show you those moments of deep emotion without explaining them. They leave it to you and the art to understand, and it really works. Lovely all around, but especially if you're into middle school stories & music.

A visually stunning graphic novel that doesn't quite come together and fulfill its potential storyline-wise.
