I think the writing was better than this one and the plot was a bit clearer, hence the higher rating but otherwise, I liked our main characters and their dynamic is interesting. Keen to see what happens next

All of the characters are so true to their roles and yet grow beyond who they were and into who they could be. An excellent plot with twists, turns, murder, and consequences. A fantastic sequel to book 1 and the stage is set for book 3.

I’m really liking this series so far. I understand why some people may not like it; I feel like people might find this book in particular quite boring, as it’s mostly political, but I really enjoyed it. I really love exploring these complex characters and the moral questions that come into play, especially when it comes to a retribution arc. I think the relationship between our two main characters is so intriguing, and I love how slow it burns. I like the discussions it brings up about colonialism and racism, and I think the representation in all areas, especially the Black, sapphic and disability rep, is great. I would have liked it if Pruett and Fili’s points of view were developed a bit more, as I often forget they existed and was surprised when they came up again, and therefore wasn’t very invested in them as characters or their little sections of plot. This did feel a little like a filler book, with a degree of second book syndrome, but I still really enjoyed it and can’t wait for the final instalment I’m the trilogy.

Luca and Touraine are together again as the empire's rule is at stake and the colonies continue to rediscover lost magic. Luca's searching for the lost magic of her own home, even knowing she might not like what she finds, and Touraine's half-willingly, half-fearfully part of a diplomatic mission that she's on because everyone knows that there's something complicated between her and Luca. AND THEN. You can imagine if you've read The Unbroken -- but you can't, because of new characters, new challenges, a new landscape and finally making the choices that will be irrevocable. I cannot wait for Book 3.

This second instalment of the Magic of the Lost has magic, romance, and intrigue galore. Luca is desperately trying to get one step ahead of her xenophobic uncle Nicolas, who threatens to dismantle all of her work with the Qazāli and take the throne from her. Touraine is now an ambassador to the Balladairan court and has to once again navigate a world where the colour of her skin makes her a target. And Pruett desperately tries to form solidarity between her ragtag soldiers and somehow overcome the Balladairan forces in Masridān across the river from Qazāl. An incredibly powerful and heart-wrenching sequel that deals with themes like colonization and identity with flair. Beyond excited for the third instalment!

a really successful second-in-a-trilogy book! the shift in location helped expand on things from the first one and introduced new elements. i like that the romance was both an excruciating slowburn (but one that made sense rather than being frustrating) and also happened in this book so they’ll be navigating it in the third. i actually thought this was a duology so i kept thinking it didn’t go far enough with the fingers plotline or the masridan plotline but those are now great hooks for the thud book. i do wish
gil got more of an arc before his death bc i found his character potentially rly interesting
again one of my fave depictions of imperialism/colonialism in a fantasy series it’s really well thought through and much more radical than a lot of series - excited to see how that intersects with the anti-royalist movement in the next book especially since the protagonist(s, sort of) are the royals.

I bow down to C.L Clark for breaking my reading slump and causing me to read 350 pages in one day.

This had all of the in-depth political machinations, interrogation of colonisation and brilliant character relationships that made me adore the first book in this series. Dark, brutal, angry - this book is one of rage against the colonial powers who will do everything to keep control. It is about discovering that freedom doesn’t mean a lack of duty.
