This would be one of the books I would want when stranded on a deserted island! I wasn't sure which edition cover to choose, because my copy lost its long ago and is held together with a rubber band... I have read and re-read it many times over the years and it still makes me laugh out loud! In the forward Gerald Durrell writes that the book was meant to be an account of the flora and fauna on the small Greek island of Corfu where he lived as a boy. But he made the mistake of introducing his family in the first few pages and they refused to leave. Between the family, the Greek friends and neighbors and the odd assortment of animals Gerry drags home, you will never meet such and eccentric bunch of characters.

This was such a delightful book. I can only recommend it. It's not terribly long, but written in such an elegant but humorous way I cannot believe it took me this long to read it. I'm not a big nature person, and while this book is written by a future zoologist it doesn't seem to matter. The story is much more than a catalog of a boys adventures on Corfu, but rather a story of a very real family. I have been to Corfu and can attest to the fact that it is striking, so reading of this family who fell in love with the place is easily understood.

At times this book's eccentric characters and humorous situations reminded me of "All Creatures Great and Small". Except in a much more magical setting, and with geckos, magpies, and scorpions intead of cows, sheep, and cats.
The author mentioned several times that anything could happen in Corfu. After reading this, I believe it!

Charming and uproariously hilarious. The Durrells were quite the family.
Thank you, Little Free Library, for providing during COVID! I've been meaning to read this ever since getting into the PBS series (which is a delight) and the book is just as much of a delight. I do appreciate books that make me chuckle. Besides that, Gerry's descriptions of the island, wildlife, and people are just perfect. I'm glad there are two more to read!
This book was funny and well written. Durrell obviously has a love of animals and of his family. The descriptions of Corfu and its inhabitants capture the peculiarities and beauty of the Greek people. This is a must read for anyone who likes travelogues or animals.
I read this book after enjoying the mini-series on PBS based upon his series of books. The book is a little wordy with a bit too much detail but his family and life were pretty wacky and it was a fun read. I will read more of this series!
