It was a bit of a slog. Moments of cute and enjoyable, but overall a bit of a struggle.

I basically skipped Part 1, it was so slow and could have been much shorter leading up to the main conflict. I believe I will enjoy the series overall but a very slow start.

No one does it better. The level of detail; the insight into her characters; the deep nature of their internal monologues; the way in which she builds not only families, but entire communities of characters is astonishing. There’s really no one else who writes like her or with her consistent level of excellence in the genre today. I’m shocked by the number of negative reviews.

Aww! Even though it dragged a but for me in the first half, I ended up really happy(ily ever after). I’m tired so I don’t have a full review in me, but
Where it got me:
-love in all its forms
-relatable struggles with the main characters
-glimpses of community

Where it left me:
-insta-ish love
-overly descriptive to the point where its distracting

But am I immediately tracking down the next one? You bet your behind I am.

I really wanted to like this book. I truly did!
Got halfway through the book and had to put it down. The author would detail things that didn't need detailing and describe who people were and what they were doing that literally had nothing to do with anything. She also mentions about the homeland about 50 times (and I didn't even finish the book by then). Unfortunately, I became very bored.

If I had a penny for every historical second chance romance book that had a heroine that remained celibate throughout the separation period while the hero gets a lot of action in bed, I'd be significantly richer 😒🙄
Love Mary Balogh's writing though.
