I didn’t even finish this book. After all of Alice’s character development was completely wiped out, I didn’t even see the point in continuing. What a poor way to end an otherwise fantastic series.

The book was a bit unexpected and I really enjoed reading it, the ending was satisfying and yet I have so many questions. I wonder what is waiting for me in the next books...

This last one felt rushed. I've loved these books from the very beginning, and I do love this one. It just felt like it was missing a lot at the end. I do like that the ending was left open so that their could be more books.

Ten years after entering into this world of witches, spooks, old gods, darkness, adventures, and friendship, I've finally decided to finish one of the definitory book series of my childhood. There was a lot of nostalgia involved into this reading experience, of course, and I am grateful to have become so strongly connected to these books that they shall forever hold an enticement over me. This is the ending of a story that, at its core, is about growing up and, gradually, stepping into adulthood by embracing the responsibilities and the heartbreak that come along with it. I appreciate that the book isn't afraid to go all the way and it's actually more daring than most finales aimed at older audiences. It doesn't tie everything up neatly and nicely, and it stays true to what the Wardstone Chronicles are. And, let me tell you, in their flawed, messy way, they are pretty great. Small Maria definitely thought so and current Maria has to agree with her. A drawing of Grimalkin's scissors still hangs on my bedroom door and the story of Tom Ward shall forever be embedded into me, similar to a mark left on the skin by the sharp nails of a witch.
