I can’t believe I’m done with the entire series. The pacing really sped up towards the end. I loved it truthfully and the extra chapters really brought the story to a nice close. Seeing the post-story interactions between LWJ and WWX made my heart jump, very sweet and earnest. (Also the other boys, so cute!) Though, I do wish there was more said between Jiang Cheng and Wei Ying.

Between you and I, there is no need to say "thank you" or "sorry"

Pages 1-187: Easy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Pages 187+: Between ⭐️ and ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, depending on the extra.
I can't believe I am rating an MDZS volume any less than 5 stars, but alas, here we are.

This volume is comprised of the end of the main story, which concludes at about a third of the book. After that are 8 short stories, the "extras", which expand slightly on either character background or future moments between our two leads. While the main story itself was spectacular, as expected of MXTX, the extras were...... less so. A few of them are really cute, but some of them I found to be somewhat questionable.

First off, the good parts:
- The novel opens on Lan Xichen's confession of Lan Wangji's feelings for Wei Wuxian. Everything LWJ has done for WWX is revealed here. Not only has he been in love with him for such a long time, but even his brother was aware and trying to support him in this as best he could. LWJ suffered immensely in his support of WWX in his past life, and now that WWX has realised his own feelings for him, this breaks his heart. I can't get over the 33 whip lashes and the 3 years of seclusion, the intensity of LWJ's love knows no bounds.
"The only mistake he has ever made in his life is you"
- I have such a soft spot for Lan Xichen in this volume. While LWJ got his happy ending with WWX, Lan Xichen lost everything. His sworn brothers are both dead, and one of them died by his own hand. His profound sadness at the end of the novel is shown very clearly with how detached he seems from everything. He is always so kind, caring and gentle, and now he is but a shell of himself. MXTX really made me feel for this sweet soul, and although we don't see it, I can't help but hope that he will be better with time and support from his little brother.
- The plot reveal was very solid, as usual. I don't think anyone saw NHS coming, not even me, and he's so good at staying under the radar that even I forgot about him at times! I wish we had seen more of the Jin Ling - Jiang Cheng - Wei Wuxian dynamic, these three have so much to say to each other, but it's clear that their character doesn't allow it just yet. The way Jiang Cheng reacted to the golden core reveal was very true to himself, and it was touching to see him get emotional and see that he still cares deeply for WWX.
- I love the reveal of "wangxian" so much 🥹 Music plays such an important role in this series and this song just embodies LWJ's love for WWX to perfection.

Now, onto the extras:
- So, I wasn't a fan of Family Banquet and Incense Burner. We delve straight into SA fantasies and rough smut, which doesn't seem to fit the vibe of the novels. I have nothing against these types of scenes, but to me, LWJ and WWX are primarily caring and romantic toward each other. They can be into rougher things, that's not my grief with this, it just didn't feel explored well or set-up in character. The punishing fantasies seem to go against LWJ's character specifically, as he spends the entirety of the novels trying to look after WWX, making sure he isn't hurt or injured or even uncomfortable. Unfortunately, I didn't like the writing of these chapters, not the representation of the characters. I apologise for this more negative segment of the review, and I am happy for you if you liked it! I just wasn't for me.
- The next few extras were really nice! We dive into Xue Yang's relationship with Jin Guangyao, with nice little cameos from my favs, Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan. It was so nice to see them again 🥹 Then, we go night hunting with WWX, LWJ and the juniors. Again, it's nice to see all the gang together, and to see the juniors come into themselves as cultivators and as young adults.
- My two favourites were Lotus Seeds and Yunmeng. We have two chapters filled with cute moments between WWX and LWJ, and we even get to see how much they cared about each other when they were young. Infatuated LWJ going to pick Lotus in a lake far away from Gusu was too adorable to handle 😭And we even learn that LWJ cooked for WWX a few times without him knowing, and this is the level of caring I love about LWJ.

All in all, I can't believe this series is over 😭 Wangxian will live in my heart forever and always. I will be rereading this series for the years to come, again and again, and again.
