I had an excellent time with this book, but I will not be reading more of the series after a teaser revealed that what I want most will not happen. It got SO good once
Gideon and Harrow’s relationship took center stage and was really explored, but apparently that takes a back seat to wider world building plots,
which is also SO good - just not what my souls needs.

The story was faster-paced, kept me guessing and had complicated characters that I both loved and loved to hate. It was fun - and a punch to the gut. I’ll be thinking about it for awhile.

After this second reading I got many more details that I first ignored and that just made me love the whole series even more

The writing had a Douglas Adams-like way of describing fantastical events through the mundane. I also appreciated the regular use of modern day slang like "salty" and "that's what she said," especially in the context of a story a million years in the future.

Gideon herself is a really fun main character. I enjoyed learning about the world through her eyes; it was certainly a case where the novel had an unreliable narrator, but it was also a really fun unreliability.

Considering the grimness of a world full of necromancy, I thought the overall vibe of the book was very fun. Gideon's penchant for humor balanced out the horror nicely.

I also thought the execution of the enemies-to-lovers trope was done EXCELLENTLY. I was completely convinced that Gideon and Harrow we obsessed with hating each other so much that it wrapped back around.

Overall- I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would and immediately wanted to pick up the next one.

A great read. Fun, engaging, mysterious and dramatic but never takes itself too seriously. Great world building, although we only see it in glimpses - I enjoyed how the setting reveals itself more and more as the book goes on. The relationship between the two main characters drives the book but the plot is also very complex, and at times a bit hard to keep track of - having read this book twice I’m still not sure I followed everything that went on! Part of this is due to the POV character being oblivious to most of the complexities of the plot, which helps to keep readers in the dark; not an unreliable narrator so much as a clueless one, which I enjoyed but did make it hard to follow at times. The middle section of the book also drags a bit. What really made the book special for me was the unique narration style, which I think could probably come across as annoying and cringy to some readers but which I found very charming. I listened to this on audiobook before I read it, which added to the experience immensely - very highly recommended.

The vibes of this book are immaculate. Necromancies, sword fighting, and space all fantastic.

I was very confused while reading this so I will probably reread it eventually. And I will say the plot was pretty slow.

My favorite thing about the book is probably Gideon. Oh little gay Gideon. She pines after almost every hot woman and doesn’t even know it. She’s so dumb and silly and everyone else is so dark and serious it’s just a funny contrast.
