Very much a slow burner. Starts off as a somewhat bland slice of life of a young married couple in 1890s England, then things get weird about two thirds the way in. Only weird though, as there's no horror or mystery anywhere here. Possibly;y one of Machen's lesser efforts.

Begins in the quotidian. Ends in the exalted.
