To Amy, everyone has a flavor. Her mom is the flavor of mint–sharp and bright. Her dad is like hot chocolate–sweet and full of gentle warmth. Amy lives on a mining colony in out in deep space, but when her dad loses his job the entire family is forced to move back to Earth. Amy says goodbye to her best friend Jemmah and climbs into a cryotube where she will spend the next 30 years frozen in a state of suspended animation, hurtling in a rocket toward her new home. Her life will never be the same, but all she can think about is how when she gets to Earth, Jemmah will have grown up without her. When Amy arrives on Earth, she feels like an alien in a strange land. The sky is beautiful but gravity is heavy and the people are weird. Stranger still is the boy she meets at her new school–a boy who has no flavor. I immediately got absorbed into this world and the family and the transition they made from deep space to Earth. I feel sad about her having to leave her friends behind and I feel happy that she is making friends so easily on Earth. I got to experience a lot of emotions and I am super intrigued to find out more about the silver haired boy in future volumes.

The artwork in "Space Boy" is really pleasing to see; it's got a kind of Jetsons vibe to it without being cheesy. Everything about the art just flows so well, and all the elements (colors, facial expressions, settings, palettes) feel cohesive with the storyline and each other. The general idea of the story is intriguing: a young girl and her family are frozen and sent 30 years away from the space mining colony they have lived on their whole lives, and now are readjusting to life on Earth.
However, after the initial setup, I feel like the story kind of becomes one big set up/prologue for the actual part "main" part of the series. Reading just Vol. 1 here is fairly unsatisfying because it answers no questions. It definitely feels like only 1/4 of a book, which can work in some cases, but "Space Boy" is 250 pages and I came out of it feeling like I didn't read much. I'll probably check out the next part of the series, but I'm really hoping it gets a lot more into the meat of the story!

It was great. I read it on Webtoons. Great characters, and their backstories. The plot is something I've never read, it's really unique in my eyes. Amy and her story is sad but now she is having an adventure she probably wouldn't be having if her father hadn't been fired. Oliver was always acting a bit odd and when they revealed why it made so much sense.

Cute graphic novel about moving/changing schools during high school. Wished it was longer, it kinda ended in a weird spot. Definitely, a series to have lined up ready to read.
Amy's synesthesia is interesting and I'm intrigued by the "flavorless" boy.

SPACE BOY, VOL 1 was such a cute graphic novel and I'm curious to see where the next one goes! Definitely a younger feel with this story but still enjoyable for adults.
