I wanted to love this book so much. In fact I DID really enjoy it up until about the 34th chapter, (there’s only 38) when I realized that the FMC I had been routing to have a redemption arc wasn’t going to have one, and that she was truly a dislikable character/person. It all went down hill from there and the ending was meh. It was like the author was tired of writing the book and ended the story without giving the reader any closure.

The book was meh, like if I’m being honest this is the least memorable book I have ever read. I had a really hard time connecting with Maude which was making the book a little irritating. It was also kind of annoying that as Maude began changing as a character there wasn’t any real conflict. We got to see SOME internal conflict but not enough for a character who was more or less stagnant for most of the book. Then there was the random romance, either make it more developed or don’t add it in at all. One thing that I did like about this book was the question I was left with: we’re these women magic, or were they just talented con artists?

4.5 stars This began with a character I thought was going to annoy me too much to continue, but her character development and growth was rapid and interesting. It delved into women's rights issues etc along side both historical characters and other fictional characters I came to really like. A surprising find, I will look for more from this author.
