I laughed at this book far more than I thought I would! I’m very glad I did the audio version. At first, I was so uncomfortable with the events and occurrences that landed Maude in the apothecary, however, that’s the whole point. This book is stuffed full of any and all forms of discrimination possible. It showcases how vile the patriarchy was/is by intwining historical references with modern language (Maude’s internal monologue had the appropriate amount of “fucks” - a lot of them). If you love humor with your sads, this book blends the two seamlessly.

The story really opens up the reader’s eyes to how the way one views the world can change based on circumstances and experiences. Thank fuck Maude went through all these experiences that turned her into a more empathic, humble person by the end. It was quite a wild ride, and once the book picked up I found myself thoroughly enjoying it.
