Really clear detailing of how the USA has handled Israel in a way that’s completely different to any other foreign state. I feel like this is a quick easy to read starting point for any American who wants to better understand israel’s occupation of and unfair dealings with Palestine.

The more I learn about the history between Palestine and Israel, the angrier I get. I am truly so disgusted with how the United States has handled this conflict. I wish I knew the history prior to October 7th. It really helps understanding the context of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. My heart goes out to the Palestinian people. 🇵🇸

I read a review that this book would help understand and be an entry to learning more about the current genocide ongoing in Palestine. And I agree that it does help the reader understand how we got to this point, from examining Zionism’s roots to seeing how various presidents have handled Israel's colonization and negotiations for a two state system. This is a good starting point to get a grasp and then move onto accounts from Palestinians on the issue.

The narrator does a great job inflecting tone in the words and quotes to really show the seriousness to show how long the left wing side of America has been silent on the issue. Like the title says, “Except for Palestine” is the one thing the left doesn’t support despite its ideals.

I do admit, reading this book made me realize how long I’ve neglected learning about Israel. I guess growing up I always thought the Middle East was full of conflict but I mainly heard about Iraq and Iran, the twisted version of Islam that gets spouted, and the long lasting consequences it has had for the Muslim community all over. This book goes back decades, throughout several presidents, Palestine’s suffering didn’t start on October 7th.

While Biden should be blasted for his hand in not only continuing the genocide, but now discontinuing aid to help those suffering, there are actions. As the book says, this conflict has been going on for decades and what has America done to help-lots of tiptoeing around, some acknowledgements that should not be said, and essentially not help Palestine.

We need to help Palestine however we can. Call those reps, donate aid and means for them to keep communicating, keep yourself informed. https://linktr.ee/stopusfunding2israel

This book is geared towards US liberals who perform progressive values but can't grasp how to apply those values to the decades long abuse of the Palestinian people.

Because I'm not in that target audience, I found many arguments to be watered down or both sides-y when the authors could have taken a much more principled stance. But maybe that's how you reach US liberals?

The structure, with a small number of long chapters, didn't work well for me either and the writing felt pretty dense. It wasn't the most engaging read.

"Except for Palestine: The Limits of Progressive Politics" by Marc Lamont Hill and Mitchell Plitnick is an important look at how the United States, particularly Democrats, have approached Israel and Palestine. Hill and Plitnick go over the history of how the US has approached Israel and Palestine and how their approach has changed slightly while still being overwhelmingly pro-Israel. They put forward that while Democrats have championed progressive politics they have historically fallen behind when it comes to Palestine.
I think this book is crucial reading for anyone interested in why the US continues to be so pro-Israel, especially in light of the current violence in that region. Hill and Plitnick do a great job of breaking down the evolution of the US's approach to the region while also providing important criticisms. I also really appreciated how the authors clearly addressed and denounced Antisemitism and how support for Palestine and the Jewish community go hand in hand.
I do think that this book should be paired with others that focus specifically on the history of the region from a nonWestern lens. This work is most beneficial as a supplement to historical texts and for those looking for insight into why progressive American politicians have repeatedly held pro-Israel stances.
