This book was an unexpected delight! I had never visioned myself enjoying fairy tales, especially written for children, before reading this. They were much entertaining, and the writing is of such a style— neither too childish nor too mature. Reading this was pretty refreshing, I'd say!

The Tinderbox
Chopping the head of that witch of was kind of unnecessary, but it did bring the soldier to become king. So... if you wanna be king chop some heads? Preferably of witches with interesting trinkets.

Little Claus and Big Claus
Both Clauses are just plain awful people, but to be fair Big Claus was worse. I don't think I've ever read this story before which I hadn't expected since I read quite a lot from Andersen.

The Princess on the Pea
A true classic, though way shorter than I remember it to be.

The Steadfast Tin Soldier
He just wanted to find love :c

The Nightingale
A beautiful tale that sends an even more beautiful message, I think. When I was little I always enjoyed it a lot, and I still do. It just has a wholesome-ish feeling that a lot of fairy tales have less off. Not that that's a bad thing, it's just nice to have it once in a while though :)

The Red Shoes
The punishment for liking red shoes does seem a little too harsh but I'm not surprised, it kind of fits his style.

I grew up with Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales so I was glad to see that this collection (six stories) was made up of some of the lesser known stories. Most of them I hadn't heard before because they were less child-friendly lets say. I knew The Red Shoes from the Efteling, but was glad to finally read the original.

The stories were nice to read, although I didn't always think this was the best translation as sometimes it was a bit awkward.

It was a good collection but still had some stories that were really not up to the mark.

Normally, i don't like giving book 1 star. This book needs one imo. I didn't like the writing style and i didn't like the fairy tales. It took me a whole month to finish only 55 pages. I was just not interested.
There were 2 fairy tales of this book told in an amusement park we have in the Netherlands. But now i know why these fairy tales didn't stick with me as a child in the first place.

I forgot how unnecessarily sad Andersen's stories were.

This was a good collection of short stories. Extremely entertaining fairy tales. Hans Christian Andersen is the master of fairy tales, and he proved it with this one!
