A storm is brewing so you better watch out!

“When Tessa Taylor unlocked her husband Ethan’s iPad to discover nude photos from a twenty-six-year-old bombshell named Lindsey, her seemingly perfect life came to a screeching halt. With a hurricane barreling toward Florida and Ethan stuck on a business trip, Tessa finds herself imprisoned in her own home with a choice to make: Does she ride out the storm until she can confront Ethan in person, or does she take matters into her own hands?”

Ya’ll, I was on the struggle bus leading up to my surgery and afterwards. I think I picked up 3 books before I decided to give Mine a go and it worked like a charm. Whew! Slump be gone.

What I loved about this one was that it took off almost immediately. I don’t necessarily count on a thriller for character development so the slow burns don’t always work for me. This was fast coming out of the gate, held my interest and actually surprised me quite a bit. While I’m not sure I loved how this one wrapped up I do think that it was unique. I would actually categorize this as more of domestic drama than a thriller. It reminded me a bit of Britney King’s Social Affair series. Like King, Cole knows how to craft a crazy character. The chapters are short, and the intrigue is there. Will you whether the storm for this one? I’d love to see how you hold up.

Not sure how to rate this one. I enjoyed it a lot, but overall I thought it was pretty "okay" especially the ending. But I did read it in a day, and I think that's says a lot, when a book captures my attention this much, so 4 stars.

This was a good book and a really quick read. I gave it only four stars because I felt some of the premise, specifically during the kidnapping, was a little off and unbelievable. At times I wasn’t even sure I really knew how I was only halfway through the book and nothing had really progressed. Additionally, I never even truly “met” the husband. I kept expecting him to come into the story but he only did through texts. Again, not a bad book, just a little unbelievable at times.

I finished this book in less than a day because of how well-written and captivating it was. Cole is an incredible writer who clearly isn't afraid to push the boundaries of human emotion, which absolutely makes this book a worthwhile read. I personally wasn't the biggest fan of the last several chapters, but aside from that, I would absolutely recommend.

I INHALED this book. Done in like six hours.

This one hits way close to home - I've been in a relationship for over a decade and I'm married. I couldn't imagine finding out my husband was cheating on me.

This book was made all the more entertaining because I couldn't stand Lindsey. I totally understand being young and dumb, but damn girl. Those daddy issues were off the charts!

I waffle between four and five stars for this one, and settled on four because I would have liked to see what Tessa actually did when Ethan got back home.

I will be up front. I did the audio version of this book and I think that had I done it any other way, I might not have finished it, or at least taken a LOT longer to finish this book. The performances by the two readers was AMAZING. That said, story wise I would give the book a 3. For Audio performance I would give it a 5 so I averaged to a 4.

40 year old mother of 3, Tessa, finds herself home alone as a Cat 4 hurricane heads towards her home in Coastal Florida. After discovering her daughter had taken her iPad with her to visit the grandparents, Tessa goes borrows her husband, Ethan's, who is in NYC on business. She discovers through messages on the tablet that he's seeing another woman.

Lindsey is a 26 year old Nursing student who met Ethan through a dating website and has convinced herself that she is the only one who really can make Ethan happy and she just needs to convince him of that.

Tessa, enraged at what she has learned, uses Ethan's account to message Lindsey and pretending to be her two-timing husband, invites Lindsey over to "ride out the storm" together. Lindsey comes running. Only to find that Ethan isn't there and Tessa has the upper hand and trapped her in a place she cannot get out of, and is demanding answers.

Like I said, had I actually read this book, I don't know if I would have found myself obsessed with it and wanting to constantly get back to it. I lay that emotional response clearly on the two women who read Tessa and Lindsey's chapters. The reader who gives voice to Tessa was amazing.

Having read the Author's note about this book, I understand the book more. This is a Mary Sue but not necessarily in a bad way. Having experienced a cheating husband, I believe Ms Cole was working through her own demons some, and this gave a good cathartic release. At least I hope it did.

Would I recommend this book. I think so, but I would strongly push for the audio version if there is a choice.

This was a pretty good book, but not my favorite of Courtney Cole’s.

I’m a huge fan of the Beautifully Broken series, and this book definitely has a darker tone than that trilogy does. This is a good thing; standalone novels should feel unique from an author’s other series.

The characters in this book are developed nicely. I like that they each have their own mini conflicts in addition to the big one (the affair). The setting was particularly interesting to me—the hurricane adds a whole new layer of tension on top of this conflict.

I enjoyed the progression of this book. As we watch Tessa fight for the truth in the present, we simultaneously learn how Lindsay’s relationship with Ethan began and unfolded. Shifting between Tessa’s present-day point of view and Lindsay’s past point of view gives the story a nice flow.

What I have the most problem with is that, shortly after Tessa discovers the affair, she stops blaming Ethan and focuses only on Lindsay. It’s hard to say if this is because she didn’t have cell service and Ethan was unreachable in New York, or if she really was placing all of the blame on Lindsay. I can’t shake the feeling that Tessa let her love for Ethan (and her desire for a perfect life) cloud her judgement and give Ethan a pass. Ultimately, he’s the one who could have put a stop to it before it even started, but he kept messaging Linsday and meeting with her and so on and so on, so Ethan is just as much to blame here. I had trouble being on Tessa’s side at times because of this, and she doesn’t return the blame to Ethan until very late in the book.

Overall, I think the story is well-written, but I wanted more from Tessa. It was a nice book to read in the beginning of October, easing me into my spooky-season reading list.

4 STARS.

I’ve been loving super entertaining and fast-paced reads recently and this book did not disappoint

A bottle of wine, a group of friends. "Okay, girls - toss out some ideas while I type". After a while, the author typed "The End" without bothering to effectively resolve the major conflict of the book. Maybe her hands were tired.
