I wanted to read this book as the first book was recommended to me by a friend and I instantly loved this series. The first and third book still make my skin crawl to this day. So, I was looking forward to reading this book and this book broke my heart and just freaked me out as well.
The main character in this book and series is a detective named Robert Hunter. He has just come back from his “vacation”. He was supposed to go to Hawaii and instead ended up helping the FBI on a case. He is on a new case. A twenty-year-old woman is found on a patch of grass by the Los Angelous International Airport – she was reported missing seven days ago. She has been left with her limbs stretched out and spread apart, placing her in a five-point human star. The autopsy revealed that she had been murdered in a violent and terrible way. Once Robert is assigned to the case, a second body turns up, Robert knows he must act quickly. He finds himself chasing an unpredictable monster and a predator whose past hides a terrible secret, whose desire to hurt people and thirst for murder can never be quenched for he is Death. Will Robert Hunter be able to find this killer once and for all.
The thing that gets me every time is Chris Carter manages to freak me out every single time, within every single book. The mystery and the suspense is brilliant and enough to keep you hooked and you shouldn’t be because it is disturbing but I couldn’t put it down. I was on edge and so frustrated with how the case was going. The way that both of these detectives were close to giving up hurt my heart. Is it too much to ask for Robert to be happy though? Like please? All I want is for him to have a life partner that keeps him in check and makes him want to come home instead of staying at the office. The plot twist of this book when you found out who Death was had me kicking my feet because I was so annoyed, I didn’t manage to guess who it was. The banter between Garcia and Robert in the beginning was so funny and it hurt my heart because I thought Garcia was leaving.
One thing I would say is a weakness, for me personally, is the short chapters. I just prefer bigger chapters. However, in this book, it did fit well with Chris Carter’s writing style where it usually doesn’t work for me. I was hooked that after a while the short chapters didn’t bother me as they usually would with other authors.
Overall, the book was an easy and quick read and because the writing was amazing, the storyline gives me the creeps and it was overall brilliant I gave it four stars. I cannot wait for the next book in the series and see how much the next bad guy creeps me out.
