heel ovjectief goed geschreven boek, maar ik vond het soms te traag gaan en te ‘poetisch’ geschreven.

Beloved by Toni Morrison

This novel is truly unique in the scope of historical and literary fiction. It has a very complex and layered narrative, that I personally struggled to keep up with at times. This is perhaps a testament to the richness of Beloved as a story. Morrison has crafted a deep-rooted exploration of the impact of slavery whilst intertwining poignant themes of motherhood and loss. The language is so beautifully eloquent and fitting for the world that Morrison creates that it forces the reader to actively deal with what they are reading. That is perhaps one of the strongest achievements of Beloved - it forces us to think.

I would've given this five stars if I hadn't personally struggled to fit the puzzle pieces of this world together. The story jumps backwards and forwards quite often, leaving me trying to work out what is happening for myself. Although, this could have just been a personal issue. I would've liked to take more time to read this and sit with the story, but I had a deadline to read it for my university lecture. I would definitely consider re-reading in the future, and I recommend it as well. However, it is quite a heavy story and deals with a lot of troubling themes. I'd recommend searching up a list of content warnings before getting into it.

Was not enjoying the subject. Might try a different Toni Morrison book.
slow-paced

The author's words rolled over me like a song. But my headspace is just not set for this one right now - maybe another day.

This was the first and best Toni Morrison book I ever read. It's raw and hopeful and horrifying and full of rage and full of beauty. It should be required reading for any American.
