There is a "me" before Beloved; there is a "me" after Beloved. Morrison's powerful network of spinning narratives swept me in and flung me out a changed person. I am still--and ever will be--processing this book.

this book was hard to read, but god it was phenomenal. such an unflinching look at slavery, its horrors and its consequences. written incredibly, so raw and alive, which is impressive for a book that is so steeped in death. it speaks of a pain so deep and dangerous and wide and yet it doesn't give up on hope. like i said, phenomenal. will read more toni morrison for sure.
I believe every woman should read this book. it’s okay to cry. it’s okay to not fully understand the grief of our past, and to not fully understand the grief of being a daughter or a mother.
I read 8 books in June 2020 and imagined each one as a character in a Living Book Review. Sign up here to receive the Living Books Reviews newsletter in your inbox each month! https://mailchi.mp/53d716a27eaf/living-book-reviews.
Still staying at home and working online. Does it count as working if I don’t have to put on makeup? Who am I if no one sees me all day? Except for Jane Austen, who has promoted herself to my supervisor and gives me passive-aggressive performance reviews. When I see my friends smiling faces, it’s through Zoom under a warning that our connection is unstable. The books clamor in too - they want their faces in little boxes.
Beloved by Toni Morrison is quiet. She doesn’t say anything because she doesn’t have to. You can read everything about her in the details of her face. The details are devastating and hopeful. She makes the young books bashful, but she can’t help it. Remember what this country has done to black women? To their families? What it’s still doing? Her face asks without asking. She’s regal for a reason - she earned her regality the hard way. Remember where we’ve been and where we’re going? Even though she doesn’t speak, her silence is perfectly constructed.

So far, one of my favorite books! The story is gripping and tense. The only challenge with the book is that there are many flashbacks that happen instantly, and it can be tricky to keep up with whether what you are reading is the present or past. But once you start to get the feel for her writing, you can start to tell when you have entered a flashback. It is one her most well written and powerful works.
