It’s a hard read, but a wonderful one. Toni Morrison’s unique use of language (her word work, as she called it), casts both a beautiful and haunting specter, on its characters, history, and the readers. It’s worth a read for anyone who wants to understand both modern society and times past. A true classic!

Insane how good this is. Also insane how long the person who annotated my used copy took to realize Beloved was a ghost lol

beautifully written and haunting, this book gives us a look into the emotional aftermath of slavery.
even towards the end of the book i had no idea who beloved was, and if she was even real.

First reread of Beloved, and it's incredible to witness how much thought has gone into the narrative from the perspective of someone who understands what is going on. Absolute 6 star read, and probably the most compelling thing I've read this year!

Toni Morrison is nothing short of incredible. Her characters are each fleshed out and unique, but their struggles are expertly communicated and distilled into their simplest parts—to the point that the barriers between reality and the novel felt like they were fading. I wish I could say more to explain how much I love her writing, but I unfortunately do not possess the same skills that she does, and so I will just say this: every book of hers that I have read has felt like the channeling of raw human experience into nothing but pages, and I have never felt that way with anything else.

I don’t actually feel qualified to rate this

probably the most horrifying book I’ve ever read, which is perfectly appropriate for the subject matter. toni morrison was a genius

loved it, but I was unfortunately too dumb for it ☹️
