This book suffers from second child syndrome. There's not a lot of plot advancement. Usually for a second book with little plot advancement, that means deeper lore, world, and/or relationship development. While different plot threads emerged in this one and Sorin and Scarlett finally identify their twin flameless, it wasn't wholly satisfying. Also, why was a side character sex scene waaaay hotter than Sorin and Scarlett's first time?!
The storytelling is a lot more tell than show and the pacing was clunky. I don't usually catch onto pacing issues when I listen to audiobooks because of how quickly I consume them, but this one stood out. Chunks of time disappear while several chapters are dedicated to an hour. Scarlett and Eliza were just suddenly bff's and after stubbornly refusing to be in any ruling capacity, Scarlett just upped and decided to accept her role and NO ONE put up ANY resistance? Oh and because of that, she is suddenly a master of her magic.
Despite Scarlett being in the fae realm for the first time, we hardly ever got to see outside of Sorin's bedroom and I found myself waitingwaitingwaiting to return to the mortal world.
Idk if I would've gotten through this book if I actually read it with my eyeballs, but we shall persist. There is interesting groundwork being laid. I just hope the storytelling gets better.

I hate miscommunication so this book frustrated me. The Twin Flame business was too drawn out, too many arguments over secrets. I don’t really understand anything about the old war. The amount similarities to TOG and ACOTAR is ridiculous.
I was pleasantly surprised by the first book but this one kind of annoyed me. I’m still going to read the next book.
