This series is phenomenal!
I didn’t think book 2 could top book 1. It did not disappoint! Just as good as book 1!! The new characters are fabulous and I love all the different points of view. Melissa is a master storyteller. So many new revelations. Nothing is ever really as it seems. A surprise on every page. Yay!!!!

I'd recommend this for anyone who likes ACOTAR, TOG, and From Blood and Ash.
Like other reviews state, there are a lot of similarities to the books above, but I liked those books for a reason. The plot and characters in this one are different enough that it didn't affect my enjoyment of the story.
Roehrich does a great job of pacing the story and hinting at what's ahead while still leaving enough mystery that you're surprised when you get there.
I'm excited to see where this series goes.

I don’t know why I did this to myself a second time, but here we are.
There is a difference between recycled tropes (because I loveeeeeeeeeee fated mates, enemies to lovers, etc.) and straight up plagiarizing another persons stories.
This is a watered down fan fiction of TOG and ACOTAR. And that is being polite.
Velaris. Hidden mating bond. Ash (shadows) spy. Chateau (the cabin). Blood marks (wyrd marks). Locks and keys. Once upon a time there was a kingdom… A romantic quote about stars that becomes a thing between main characters. Bad ass witches who are the best at fighting and ride mythical creatures that no one else can tame. An assassin lord whose name also starts with A who is weirdly obsessed with the FMC. DARLING.
THE LIST GOES ON AND ON. And that’s the thing. A few things being SIMILAR is one thing. But taking two pieces of work from a successful author (and SJM is, objectively, successful) and mashing them together, taking their most treasured parts and turning it into a poorly paced/developed book is w i l d. And the crazy part is, you ripped off so much from another author that it shouldn’t have been shitty because you had your plot and timeline already made for you. Lmao.
I read this right after I read CC and desperately needed to feel like I was back in a fantasy world that I enjoyed. Maybe that’s why I liked it the first time, because it seemed liked an extension of what I had already been reading. Maybe that’s why so many people DO like this book series. And if you do, more power to you. But after revisiting this a year later I’m really questioning why I rated this so high the first time around.
Anywho. Spoilers below.
Scarlett wakes up in the fire court, aka the court that is the cruelest and most cunning. Sound familiar? There she meets Sorin’s inner circle (aka inner court). Eliza is resident weapons baddie with no personality other than being assaulted by her family. Reminds me of someone I know… Rayner who is our silent and broody spy master with smoke and ashes as his gift (Azriel, is that you without shadows?). We also get Cyrus whose only real contribution to the story is sharing how he lost his twin flame (mate) and excessively using daaaaarliiiiiing. There’s Briar, who I think might be a mild copy of Fenrys from TOG, but

I got so sucked into this series I didn’t even stop to write a review! But here I am afterwards telling you TO READ THIS SERIES. If you love fantasy, romance, witty banter, well-rounded characters and just incredible writing, this series is for you. I am truly amazed this series hasn’t flown off the charts yet because it completely deserves to.
