the ending!!!!! i put this book down for a week or two at about 80% but that was entirely my fault as I lose interest in things at the drop of a hat. I did really enjoy this book and I love Scarlett's character growth. You can see how much she is healing from her past trauma and I love how Melissa characterizes this. Callan was super annoying like boy she told you how many times she dont want your ass.. get the damn picture!!! but it made the reveal of her and Sorin that much funnier imo. Anyway, I was fully like speed reading the last 20% just to finish until that last line!! Now I am so excited for book 3!

UGH MELISSA?!! This series is my new Roman Empire. I am in fucking LOVE! This book feels like the child of TOG and ACOTAR and it could not be more perfect. The world building is absolutely delicious, the characters are so intricate and unique, the magic system is incredible, and I literally cannot believe how amazing of a foundation the first book created for this book. The romance, the training, the banter, the fae lands, THE PLOT… UGH! I’m just word vomiting at this point. My brain is on maximum overdrive right now due to processing what I just read (how dare you leave me on that cliffhanger MELISSA)!! Anyway, read the book, if you don’t read the book, we’re not friends. PERIODT!

DNF loved first. Second is too slow

If Sarah J. Maas' Heir of Fire and A Court of Mist and Fury had a dark edgy lovechild, it would probably look something like Lady of Shadows.

This sequel to Lady of Darkness picks up right where book 1 left off, and it only gets grander, darker, sexier, and more angsty with each turn of the page. I really liked the direction this story went in, even if a lot of the plot beats and character types felt suspiciously similar to other well-beloved fantasy romances I've read.

The scope of the story expands as Scarlett explores new places outside the human realms, resulting in plenty of exciting revelations as she comes into her powers and stumbles upon age-old hidden truths. Also, the setting of the Fire Court was just quite cozy to me, and I loved the found family vibes going on there. Is it a bit of a wannabe Night Court? Maybe. But you know what, I ate it up.

I also really liked that this sequel broadened the scope, bringing in more POVs than just those of Scarlett and Sorin. Their tumultuous dynamic started to get a bit tiresome to me at points, which is why I was so glad to have Prince Callan (the true gem of this story, who was done awfully dirty #justiceforcallan) and, later on, Queen Talwyn to fall back on. Their perspectives really added a lot to the story, not only in terms of enjoyment for me, but also in terms of nuance and intrigue.

There truly isn't anything spectacular or refreshing about this series, but I have been completely and utterly sucked into all the emotional turmoil, interpersonal drama, and deliciously high levels of angst and sexual tension between all these characters. There is objectively little plot progression in this sequel, but I actually really appreciated that the slower pacing allowed for some great character and relationship building.

And dammit, if Roehrich isn't painfully good at writing shocking final chapters that simply demand you to jump into the next book immediately. So, the Lady of Darkness bingeread continues; this is exactly the type of delicious braincandy I wanted and needed from this story!

4.5!!

"Rage, Scarlett. Rage and scream and cry and fall apart. You are allowed to feel and do all those things, but you do not stop fighting. You do not give up. You become a bigger storm."

I really enjoyed this book! As a fantasy romance fan, it hit all the right notes - compelling characters, swoon-worthy moments, and a plot packed with emotional depth. However, I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd read it all before.

If you’ve read Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses, the similarities will stand out immediately. From the tight-knit inner circle to the details of the mating bond and the recurring imagery of stars and dreams, it felt like a clear nod to Sarah J. Maas’s work. While these elements add to the book’s charm, they make it feel overly familiar.

That said, I couldn’t stop turning the pages. This book is undeniably addictive! The fiery drama, the chemistry between the characters, and the emotional tension were everything I crave in a fantasy romance. The Maas-inspired vibes didn’t bother me too much - I devoured every bit of it.

Still, I couldn’t bring myself to give it five stars. The heavy reliance on familiar tropes and borrowed elements kept it from standing out. I hope the next book will take more risks and carve out a unique identity because this series has so much potential to shine.
