The first scary story I can recall reading was a ghost tale. Yrsa has definitely proven that such a story can still scare the living daylights out of me. One of the few times every twist and turn of a story has seemed to actually slot perfectly into place at the end. Holy cow

If the ending had been just a liiiiitle different I'd have given this 4 stars.
If the ghost boy had recognized Katrya's shared outsider status and spared her it would have been a perfect button. But Alas.
Listened to this with Spotify hours while miserable with a summer cold and couldn't stand to hold up the physical paperback.

An absolutely amazing read that engaged me from beginning to end. A real page-turner, I could've easily finished this in two days. I found myself turning my head every once in a while reading this, wanting to make sure nothing is standing behind me or in the doorway, and the amount of times my mouth was agape or I cried out was quite big. I totally loved and bought the story, found myself so invested in it that when I realised the plot twist (one of them at least) right before it was mentioned in the book I had to pause for a minute. I think that Sigurdardottir is an excellent writer and she paints the wintery dark landscapes with such skill that I was fully immersed and heard every creak of the floorboards and footstep in the snow. Apart from that, it has to be said that she did an incredible job guiding the reader through the characters' emotions and mental state. After all, this is a story of unresolved trauma, anger, grief and all the ugliest and messiest feelings humans have.

Oh my goodness this was a masterpiece. Kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. And the way everything finally connects in the end, UGH. Absolutely amazing.
