A generous 3. Even if that feels harsh as I do it. It did start off slowly and took awhile to build real genuine interest. I was far more interested in Freyr's portion of the story than the 3 on the island. The tone and creepiness was really well done. The ending was a bit vague and left some unanswered questions that I found unsatisfactory.

My first foray into Icelandic horror. If this is any indication, great stuff.
I don't have a word for this horror, besides to describe what it isn't: a jump scare. Both in the sense that it was expertly planned, and that it never properly frightened me. The horror was at most ominous, but its plot progression was so intricate, emotional, and well-planned, it still feels exemplary.
Somehow the logical and supernatural needs of the story are met. And the emotional needs of the characters are also satisfied in pursuit of answers to mysterious deaths and haunted house occurrences. I think some of the characters decisions were odd, unjustified, and stupid. And at times, I felt they took liberties with the limits of psychology. Nonetheless, I find the story overall successful.
Above all, I think the author has a strong sense of "little did they know" - for both the characters and the reader. It was exciting to unravel.
