I picked this up because I wanted to read another book similar to R.F. Kuang’s Yellowface and while this didn’t quite live up to Kuang’s novel, it was still pretty decent. The major difference is that while Yellowface was more literary fiction with a thriller subplot, Who is Maud Dixon is definitely a thriller with a literary fiction subplot. That being said, I feel like this was a pretty solid thriller with morally grey characters that I thoroughly enjoyed reading about.

This was, for me, mostly pretty predictable, but I still really enjoyed the ride. There's a great slow-burn build of tension and unease, culminating in an absolutely wild sequence of events, and I felt truly uncomfortable and unsettled throughout. I particularly loved the parts set in Morocco, as there was just such a wonderfully vivid sense of place and that really heightened things for me. The main characters are for the most part thoroughly unlikeable, but are definitely very well-crafted. And, even though I worked out most of what was going to happen, I still really appreciated the commentary on identity, power, and the publishing industry, and overall had an enjoyable reading experience.

Some of the twists were a bit predictable, some ideas could have had a bit more backing to them, and the characters were purposely unlikeable but overall this was a great read with stunning layers to it and ultimately showing the reader how far people will go to achieve what they feel is owed to them.

I didn't like this book at all. The plot sounds exciting but everything moves extremely slowly and the characters are constantly making stupid decisions. The sheer number of things every person in the vicinity had to overlook for the ending to work was ridiculous.

This book is a page-turning, twisty thriller - I had a lot of ideas about what was going to happen, some of which were right, and some weren't, but I was interested all the way - very gripping and a fast read. My main issue was the characters, who weren't terribly likeable, and the ending, which I found unsatisfying, but won't say more of for fear of spoilers. Still, if you like a thriller, you'll enjoy.
