This story is about chess and romance. I liked it  because its a  adventurous ride through Mal's life.
My favorite character is  Mal because she is brave and smart.

Omg what a delightful wee book; chess is … sexy? I’m as surprised as you. Extremely on brand Ali Hazelwood (complete with yearning tall man in a Henley). A lot of similarities with the FMC from Love, Theoretically. Loved this book, great if you love Hazelwood with a bit less spice. Great bi rep, absolutely horribly great example of garbage American health care system.

Didn't expect to like it this much.

This book was adorable! It was wonderful to see the young brilliant FMC in chess. I don’t personally play chess but I really enjoyed the game. The play descriptions Ali gave were enough for me to love the book, but never took away from the steady moving plot.

The narrator of this book, Karissa Vacker, had an excellent range of accents and voices that helped distinguish different characters. She added just enough dramatics to make the listening experience great but not take away the read.

Overall I liked this. There were times I struggled to connect with the characters as they are very young and sometimes very stupid, but this is YA so I kept reminding myself to take a deep breath. Disappointed a bit by the FMC - Mallory was sadly both the most fleshed out and the most annoying character of them all. The parts of her self-sabotaging and me screaming at the book went on way too long.
Mallory's mother and sisters were just horrible throughout and I couldn't accept their "I didn't know you felt this way" explanation of the stress they were putting on their own family. Also felt VERY strange that the sisters were so openly talking about sex but this was a closed door YA romance? I was also super disappointed after the entire book built up the match when Mallory and Nolan would play together and then we get to see 0% of their 12 games?? What a letdown.
Still had some cute, heartwarming moments and was a fun audiobook.
