I went into this book knowing one thing and one thing only: some people don't feel like it's Ali's strongest book... its my first time reading her book and I was hooked from the get go? had an extremely hard time letting it go..
Mallory's dynamics with her family did keep me absolutely hooked and engrossed in it, same with Nolan's obsession in her? I legit was soo excited to get back into it every time I had to put it down, which was only two times.
I might read more of her books actually... I'm soo invested now.

first ali hazelwood book and I am glad I chose the one about loser chess players
the king & queen: he was the most important piece on the board but she was deadliest
it’s so hard for me to write bad things about cute books (bc yes, i did think this book was cute) but mallory truly was the only fleshed out, decent character in this book (i’ll give oz a few points bc he made me laugh)… and also her sister was absolutely, unbelievably awful. idc if she’s 15 i would’ve drop kicked her if she were my sister.
alsooooo asexuality is very rarely “i have never wanted to have sex ever in my entire life until i laid eyes on you” and yet is is portrayed that way in almost all of her books. like please stop. it’s getting so old and almost offensive. asexuality may be a spectrum but it’s also not something that can be “fixed” if you meet the right person
anywho i loved mallory and nolan was… alrighht. he didn’t really have a personality. like he was somehow quiet, sullen, rude, and yet deeply charismatic and likable? but i loved the chess aspect it was super fun
