This is a wonderful children's book from beloved illustrator/writer Jan Brett. My favorite of her books. Gorgeous illustrations, with the bonus of a non-verbal "extra" story that plays out on every page, and features a hedgehog. When my children were small they requested this book again and again. I've easily read it 100 times.

I've always enjoyed Jan Brett's illustrations. Though I didn't like this one as much as "The Mitten," the double story going on in the troll house underneath the main illustrations was clever.

A young girl is going over a mountain alone with her dog - quick call Child Protective Services (or the equivalent). Cute story with pretty good art. I like the idea of the troll cave on the bottom of each page but wish more had been done with it. I like the girl being her own hero, the dog is the victim in this one. And yet I wish there had been more to this story in general. 3.5 of 5.

The story itself might not be brilliant, but it is sweet and fun, and I give it a 5 for the illustrations. If you read it yourself you'll see that there's another little story going on in the border that is quite hilarious. Brett is just marvelous, and I make sure to always read this around Christmas.
