wow. delusion and power really do a number on people. i don’t even really know what to say. i feel like both everything and nothing happened at the same time, and yet i enjoyed it a lot. if anything, i think i have to read piranesi again. every time there was a statue or a labyrinth, i got very excited.

my favorite line:
“I am going now. I wish you no good morning! I take no leave of you!” And so saying, he flung some coins upon the table and left.

Long, tedious, boring, pointless. I had a difficult time finishing it.

Another book that could have benefited from being halved in length. It was a decent concept, though, and the characters felt very real to me.

An incredibly rich and well researched piece of fantasy and fiction. I struggled through the first half due to slow pacing and devoured the last part.

this book is increadible.  I knew i would love it bc piranesi is a masterpiece but I didn't expect to get so emotionally invested in a 1000 page book with goddamn footnotes. But the way each one was a whole story, a whole collection of novels, a whole lore to a fantastical land! The capacity of the universe that this book created is so immense I am in awe. And even when (thanks to various prophecies and call backs and dramatic irony) I knew what was about to happen,  the rug still managed to be pulled from under my feet. I am shocked and disturbed and desperate for more of this world that is so our own and yet so far away. I feel like I have been reading this book for years and the adventures it has taken me on! The places I have been to! The sights I have seen! And these characters!!!! How do I simultaneously love and hate them all! I adore that there are miserable Georgian men and fierce Georgian women it's just so nice and so real to see. ARABELLA AND JONATHAN STRANGE I LOVE YOU.

Exquisite.
