What a curious, strange, yet wonderful book. I find, perhaps more than anything, what's excellent about this book is that it's not a story I would have imagined anyone wanting to tell - it just seems so understated as premise. And yet - and yet. The characters are masterfully drawn (despite most of them being quite unlikable), and while it's a slow burn the whole way through, the threads draw together in a most satisfactory way.
This is a book I would have rated higher if I enjoyed spending time with the characters. I think that might say more about me and my biases than the book itself, however - so don't let that dissuade you.
