I'm guessing you will either love this book or hate it. I loved it. Told in the style of a Victorian novel, the magic is slowly woven in. It's done incredibly well.

ah what do i say about this book
it's brilliantly written, and feels as though it genuinely came straight out of the 19th century. i really enjoyed the writing style and the story, but find that i can't think of a single person to confidently recommend this book to.
it's super slow paced, at some points i was so lost and there are a fair few characters to keep up with, but it all felt necessary. usually with a book this long (1000+ pages) i feel there are bits that could've been left out but everything here felt entirely appropriate to the story and design of the book.
i think I'd love to read more modern-written classics like this, and Susanna Clarke?
