I picked this book up for a bit of light reading over a short vacation. It grabbed me at first, but I went back and forth while I was reading it. Felt as though there wasn't a lot of movement in the action, but I enjoyed the ending. All in all a fun little romp, if a bit dragging in parts.

good writing and worldbuilding, however i have to admit that the book was too long and meandering for my liking. i still read the 1000 pages over the course of a month, but more as a challenge to myself than because was drawn to or gripped by the story

Starts slow, but last half much more interesting.
This is a hard review to write. The writing and tone were fantastic, as was the original take on magic. But it was way too long by several hundred pages, and the storyline was not really that exciting. I loved the author’s other book, Piranesi, so this one was a sad miss for me.
