So entertaining with strong characters and clever, funny moments. I would have loved to give this 5 stars, but unfortunately, the ending wasn't as strong as other parts of the story.
In a lot of ways, this felt like Jane Austen writing fantasy, and I love Susanna Clarke for that! It was my first time reading this author, and I'm sure I'd enjoy more books from her.

I'm not too surprised at how divided the reviews of this book are, I think readers will either find it completely charming or completely underwhelming. I am in the charmed camp, I loved this book! I took my time finishing it near the end as I didn't want it to be done. It makes me want to add a new shelf to Good Reads under Magic.

While this book was a little slow in places, I think I'm still happy to recommend it as a 5 star read. Never read anything else like it, a super grounded magical story, and a completely realized world.
The slower pace isn't to the books detriment, instead you really get a sense of the characters and almost step in to little vingettes of their lives.
I felt the ending was slightly rushed, but it's very much a story that's about the journey, so again, that feels like a very minor gripe. You're left with enough answers to satisfy, but a sense that you're alongside the characters, who themselves don't truly understand the scope of the story they've been part of.
