I am far from the first person to make this comparison, but this was like if Jane Austen wrote about wizards; I love Jane Austen and I fucking love wizards. It was much funnier than I thought it was going to be; again, in a very similar manner to how Jane Austen is funny, that particular kind of dry sarcastic wit. It was also written far more like a historical text than a traditional fantasy work — footnotes abound and references to "history" (which of course never actually happened) and also lots of history (we go through the whole Napoleonic wars, Lord Byron shows up for a little while, it's honestly kind of nuts). The first chapter takes place in "Autumn 1806" and the final chapter is dated "Spring 1817," but it not infrequently makes large time jumps so it's actually a lot slower than you might think.
Very, very soft magic system, very little is explained even remotely. Due to the way it's written, certain things are hinted at but it remains somewhat obscure the whole time. I really enjoyed it, but it certainly is Not For Everyone. I, however, have a particular fondness for books that pretend to have been true history recorded by another person (LOTR, The Princess Bride) so it was very much For Me.
