Swinging back to the beginning of his career with this one, I’ve now read every novel by Cormac McCarthy published to date (as of June, 2022). I’d compare it directly with early Nabokov: both are so overwhelmed by their love of the sensuality of the sensorium of the natural world, it saturates the text to the point that plot is nearly submerged. That’s fine by me, actually. Not a favorite of mine amongst his novels, but cool to see the love of describing nature on such explicit, positive display.

Far and away my least favorite McCarthy book so far. Reminded me greatly of The Devil all the Time with its intertwining generational saga set in the rural South...a comparison I would not necessarily consider favorable.

Mostly I was struck by how dull I found the book. While McCarthy's prose is superb as always and both the characters of Sylder and Ather are fascinating the narrative is meandering and development so non-existent in the scant 240 pages that you finish the novel feeling largely unfulfilled.
