opening a book, its leaves dead, but the corpses thereof still filled with animate life in the hieroglyphs scratched thereon, falls open to pages whose words swim from readers eyes when they fail to pay attention. each phrase unpaired from its meaning, or myriad meanings, as a hand with skeletal surety has scribbled down this ongoing description of life and death. no matter the bibliopole or librophile who rants, good or ill , seems to say so.
the first of McCarthy's books, though not the first I've read. I would have wanted to read more. good thing I've got 5 more on my shelf that haven't been read yet.
Blood Meridian still my favorite.

McCarthy's The Orchard Keeper is most definitely a staple novel in the study of writing and prose. Where the novel becomes less enjoyable, or notable for that matter, is the convolution of the novel's plot. I will keep this blurb spoiler-free, although I don't believe there is a real importance to "spoilers" when discussing McCarthy's novels; what remains clear in my head after finishing The Orchard Keeper can be best seen through two statements: That was beautiful! and, What did I just read?
I am by no means a stranger to McCarthy's writing style and his storytelling, but there was something different about this novel -- and I don't say this in a necessarily good way.
The plot of The Orchard Keeper is second to McCarthy's writing. Some people look for a nice confluence of style and storytelling to push the books they enjoy; if you are one of those people, I don't think you will enjoy this book. It is very much a book about philosophical scenarios and language.
All that being said, I still recommend it.

It’s very hard to follow the story but I liked some aspects of it. It’s Faulkner-ish as everyone else seems to say. Might reread.

Liked aspects of it, his prose is great as per usual but feel like he spends way too long trying to build an atmosphere and neglects plots and character development. Ending feels weirdly anti-climatic and was very unusually paced
