Wolfhunter River

I'm not going to lie, when I read the description for this book, I wasn't as excited as I was for the last two. It's just not the same as a good cat-and-mouse-chase-type of a thriller. But, I was pleasantly surprised that I did actually quite enjoy this book just in a different way.

I did knock this one down to 4 stars instead of 5 because of this, but I think it does well in its' own way! I do like that this is more of a stand-alone (kinda) - meaning that it's not dragged on from the first two. *SPOILER* If we know the outcome from the second book, you'll know Melvin can't continue his reign completely (see the third book, lol) so I liked that we finally get to see the family in a different light.

I will say I didn't see the final twist coming. That's always nice. I read a lot of thrillers, so to have a book that surprises me fully is few and far between. I do recommend this book, but it just wasn't my fave in comparison to the first two. But, it definitely deserves its' spot with an above average rating from me.

Wolfhunter River is the third in the series by Rachel Caine. Gwen Proctor and her family - Lanny, Connor and Sam are all dealing with the aftermath that comes after the publicized death of her ex-husband Melvin Royal. As with the previous novels, every book is named after a body of water. Gwen receives a phone call from a woman in desperate need of help. Cautious and skeptical, Gwen isn't sure how to proceed. And why? She is threatened and terrorized daily in person and via the Internet.

This series is always a fun read, but the third in the series is very obviously bridging the gap between a victimized mother and a woman who will become the helper herself. This becomes a little too obvious and can diminish some suspense. The novel has some very funny dramatized lines, but it somehow seems to work because it seems like this is just how Gwen thinks.

Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas and Mercer for the ARC. I give this 3 stars. It's a fun and at times ridiculous read, and also the weakest of the three.

Not my favorite...

But still a page turner. I really do enjoy Gwen and Sam. I’d like to see them get the happy ending they deserve...

A good read that falls somewhat short of its predecessors.

A solid 4 stars! To be honest, I wasn't sure that I wanted a Book #3 in this series. Book #2 tied up the story of Gwen Proctor and her family pretty nicely, and I was worried that a departure from that main story line was going to end up resulting in a letdown in Book #3, but I was SO wrong!

Rachel Caine managed to incorporate Gwen's ongoing family saga alongside the introduction of a new threat and side story, and it worked surprisingly well! This book has the same fast-paced action and edge-of-your-seat suspense that I've come to expect from this series, and I couldn't put it down!

And that ending - despite my initial reservations, I'm looking forward to seeing what else happens in this continuing series!

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an advance review copy.

Annndddd what I was scared of - book series just don’t work for me…it’s just like trying to milk a story that just makes less and less sense at it goes on. It was pretty confusing from the start and honestly the most confusing part didn’t even get addressed at the end. Not very excited for the next book but committed to finishing this series now
