Sometimes, I read a series and I really like it - and then I see the author has written several series and I stash them somewhere for a rainy day (especially if other fans of the author confirmed the series are good and won't be huge disappointments).

That's the story here, too. I read "Whyborne and Griffin" and loved it, and I noticed Jordan L. Hawk had written contemporary romance, too, so I put the rest of her work on my tbr list and left it there for a while, until I felt that I needed something fun to pick me up from a reading slump. Therefore, I started "Hunter of Demons", which I finished almost in one sitting. And while it didn't wow me, I liked it and I'll be starting the next book in the series tonight (which is great, considering I bought the whole pack of books, rather than just a volume).

The story's shorter than I'd expected - at 127 pages, it's more of a novella than a novel. That isn't an issue, but there isn't a lot of room for Hawk to develop the world, the characters and the story in, so it feels more like a set-up for what's to follow than a book in itself. That's fine, but I'll need to see the rest of "Spectr" before I can love it.

So, in a contemporary world where some people have supernatural powers and demons sometimes make their appearance, Caleb hid his (minor) magical talent for fear that he'd be discriminated against. Unfortunately, his brother has been killed by a demon which possessed the corpse, so now Caleb allied himself with his sister-in-law and her friends to put his brother to rest - for real, this time. Except his new allies are chillingly anti-magic, the paranormal police might get involved and discover his secret powers, and the possessing demon is acting strange and way more powerful than it should have been.

This is a good start, but feels very short -- I don't feel like I quite have a handle on everything yet. I think I'll hold off on reviewing properly until I finish the first volume.

What? Over already? I feel like I just watched the first episode of a really cool tv show. One I desperately need to binge cause it can't be over already! Things were getting sooo good!

A modern day paranormal mystery in a world were demons are common. People born with paranormal abilities are transcripted into a supernatural police force called SPECTER. Religious assholes make things difficult for people born with powers.

Caleb has carefully avoided getting tangled up with all that nonsense and lives a peaceful everyday life. But everything changes when he gets possessed by a demon and a handsome SPECTER detective makes his appearance.

Very little romance and honestly I wouldn't have it any other way. Who needs heart eyes when you're demon hunting? If anything there was too much romance and not enough demon hunting.

Also Melanie better live long enough to show remorse. That yellow bellied skank of a traitorous mofo.

Interesting concept and a world I'd like to explore a little more. Something like a cross between X-Men and SHEILD and Poltergeist (these are a few of my favorite things). It was exactly the kind of escapist book I needed today.

Ummm, not sure what I just read. It did have a lot of action, paranormal, and urban fantasy aspects to the story; however, I am still unsure how the male/male romance plays into the story. There just wasn't enough meat for me to really get into the storyline beside the fact that it is normal people fighting against paranormal people.

This specific video review will be included in the October 2018 wrap-up.

Oh, I like all about this! I love this Universe, this alternative reality with monsters and paranormal squads. This is going to be another favourite, I can sense it :P

Okay, the characters are fantastic, and the way the drakul possession works? Brilliant! I think the best dialogues are the ones between Caleb and Grey *laughs*

The story is creepy and fun, there is a mystery going on, and an arc that, if the previous series by this author are a hint, will take a lot of books to evolve.

I really liked the narration, too, so this is a total win. And I have the whole series in audio \o/

To the next one!

Someone described this series to me as "NCIS meets Dark Shadows", but having read this starter book, it feels a lot more "X-Files meets Dresden Files"

ALL THE FILES...
