One of the most excruciatingly boring things I’ve ever read in my life written by some guy who wants to copulate with the American landscape with a healthy dose of casual racism.

I see the historical and literary importance of Whitman, but I don't like his work. I find it overwrought and overly self-focused. His perspective is very of the time and very male. Strong manifest destiny and colonizer vibes.

I enjoyed this but it’s not the easiest of reads. Some parts get repetitive but this gives an in depth view of America in the 1800s. There are lots of lines in this that really spoke to me. Only read this if you are into the classics and okay reading lists of things from the 1800s.

4.5 stars

The parts I loved, I really loved but the rest was tedious and monotonous. So much praise, so many ships and superb things and people. Maybe I just prefer more depressive poetry but it was very difficult to get through it.

How could any human not be completely enamored with this?

Very nice,
scenic.

It was a very interesting experience for me to read this book over the course of a year! This is the first time I’ve purposefully (lol) spent that much time on a book.

I read the deathbed edition, which features 400+ poems that Whitman compiled over the course of his life. It did feel like a voyage with Whitman, who fashioned himself a “proletarian bard,” with his emphasis on the Individual/the early American masses. It’s hard to review such an all-encompassing collection, but these poems range from the spiritual to the political to the erotic and earthy. What is pervasive is Whitman’s passion for life and his passion for the egalitarian and democratic potential of America.
