I have been waiting to read this collection since I was a wee high schooler and every glorious line was every bit worth the wait I knew it would be. I am a religious romanticist and I always will be. I sing my body electric! I really truly do! Southern comrade essential reading.

////
Who but I should be the poet of the comrades? I say there is in fact no evil or if there is, I say it is just as important to you, to the land, or to me as everything else.

Listen America, daughter or son. It is a painful thing to love a man or woman to excess. Yet it satisfies.

Have you practiced so long as to learn to read?

Oh to go back to the place where I was born and here the birds once more…

She too is a law of nature. There is no law stronger than she is.

The substantial words are in the sea in the ground in you!

Not one can grow for another. The love comes back to the lover and the gift comes back to the giver. The man understands only his own greatness or goodness or the effects of it.

The earth is just as positive and erect as before. But the soul is also real and positive and erect.

I place my hand upon you that you may be my poem.

Miracles? Every time I talk by day with the people I love or the wonderfulness of sundown or the full moon in spring. Every hour of light and dark is a miracle. To me the sea is a continuous miracle. What stranger miracles are there?

First class literature does not shine by any luminosity on its own nor do its poems. They grow of circumstances and are evolutionary. The actual living light is always curiously from elsewhere. Follows unaccountable sources. And is lunar and relative at the best.

I really liked this collection of poetry from Whitman. My favorites are the most known "Song of Myself" and "Body Electric"; they are really intriguing and very beautiful right off rom the start. In these poems, Whitman writes about freedom, the soul, brotherhood, sisterhood, love, sex and the meaning of the being.

Best read while camping in and driving across the American wilderness.

Read this one again---just because. :)

Technically didn’t finish it. Tried 4 times. Can’t get into it. I feel awful.
