song of myself is life changing. such positivity! such life affirming joy! i can feel walt, just as he says, when i’m walking barefoot in the grass
Aside from the racist moments...
BEAUTIFULLY written, particularly the pieces around life and nature. He captured the essences of these things beautifully.

I’m sure this book deserves its recognition for historical significance. It’s easy to see how revolutionary it was in its time. As 2020 reading, though, I just couldn’t get into it as much as I hoped. Obviously, “Song of Myself” is the centerpiece of the book, and was a poem I enjoyed. Everything else felt more or less like filler - the philosophical elements are vague, the themes are heavily repetitive, and Whitman has a maddening tendency to employ certain rhetorical devices (like long lists of things or people, or series of opposites) over and over again.
Half of this collection is truly exquisite and the other half is Walt going “here is a list of things I like :)” but it’s all enjoyable so I have very few complaints.

I understand why everyone in the 1800s want to have sex with him because if I was alive in the 1800s and I read this I’d want to sleep with him too because I’ve read this in 2024 and I would sleep with him. 10 points to the narrator for doing the bird voice for the bird poems.
