Whitman is not the poet for me.  I had high expectations, but the content was just too much.  I hate to DNF something, but I just didn’t enjoy it at all.

Really enjoyed the poetry. The preface and the afterword were also interesting (though dramatically different), but the contemporary reviews at the end got dull, so I skipped most of them. It was quite amusing reading Whitman's review of his own "anonymous" poetry, though.

I've never really been too hot on poetry, meaning, that I've always felt that prose has done a better job of speaking to me. I love words and when they are played with beautifully, I am sold. Encountered first in high school, Leaves of Grass got me, and kept me. Many poems I can appreciate, I can munch on the symbolism and analyze meaning and author intention, etc, but at the end of the day, they don't stick. The poems in Leaves of Grass, and Whitman in general, spoke to me. I love his passion, his zeal. I feel that he speaks from truth, and that is something I appreciate to no end.
