This is not a one sitting book. It's a book you leave out and savor
The manifest destiny bullshit is too heavy-handed and the style does nothing for me. I just can't right now. I want to read poetry that is beautiful and moves me. This poetry just makes me feel annoyed.

Now in my top 3 books ever! I have never really read poetry, but these poems really got me. I teared up at some of them. So beautiful, especially the nature ones. I loved hearing his take on the civil war through poetry as well. Gorgeous as an audiobook and I'll definitely be purchasing a physical copy to read again. Walt Whitman has a way with words, and I love his free-verse poetry instead of everything rhyming. Definitely worth reading at least once!
Look, I'm not really a fan of poetry, but this was just fantastic.

I’m not very much into poetry so don’t come for me yall. This was a really good book, though long-winded (I wouldn’t read it again, I fear) <3
While I recognize the importance and extensive influence this work has had, it wasn't one of my favorites -- definitely not something I would read again and again. Certain stanzas in "Song of Myself" were wonderful, though... and I feel more well-rounded for having read it, so there's that.
